Toyota to recall up to 250,000 Tacoma Pickups
Toyota Motor North America has announced a sizable recall of approximately 228,000 of their midsize Tacoma pickup trucks, specifically the 2016 and 2017 models. The recall comes in light of a potential oil leak issue in the rear differentials, which could potentially lead to a vehicle seizure and a loss of control. Below is the official statement from Toyota’s press room:
On April 27, 2017, Toyota Motor North America, Inc., disclosed that certain 2016 and 2017 Model Year Toyota Tacoma vehicles in the U.S. are affected by this safety recall.
The involved vehicles could have rear differentials that may leak oil. If a vehicle continues to operate under these conditions, it could result in damage to the rear differential, leading to noise and reduced propulsion. In some instances, the rear differential could seize, causing the vehicle to lose control and increasing the risk of an accident.
As a part of the recall process, Toyota dealers will inspect the rear differential for any oil leakage. In cases where no leaks are detected, all fasteners will be re-tightened. If a leak is present, the rear differential carrier gasket will be replaced with a new one, and new fasteners will be installed. If damage to the rear differential components is detected, the rear differential carrier assembly will be replaced entirely. All remedies will be provided at no cost to the customers. Known owners of the affected vehicles will receive a notification via first-class mail starting in mid-June.
