  1. I won’t go into everything, but can help you easily knock that in half by eliminating the low hanging fruit;

    You don’t have to accept the $2500 worth of new exhaust pipes. You actually have a number of options when dealing with this;

    1) find some used pipes that are in good enough shape to install,
    2) while they are messing around with other parts of the truck, YOU can take the old pipes to a muffler shop to have repaired. It is very likely just the mating flanges between sections of pipe that are shot. A muffler shop can weld on new flanges so the pipes can be re-installed.
    3) tell them to suck an egg and leave the exhaust OFF and you will deal with it elsewhere since their prices are out of line.

    It is true that they should NOT be responsible for covering the exhaust system, because lets face it, the truck is TEN YEARS OLD, and the exhaust system really is separate from the frame and almost certainly ready for replacement by now anyway. The issue that you are facing here is that auto dealers don’t “repair” things. They cut off and replace. Don’t worry about the rationale for this, but suffice it to say, there is a degree of liability involved in that policy, especially when you are dealing with more sensitive components, like the brakes. So the common exhaust problem that they are likely facing, is that exhaust flanges rust BADLY, and certainly can’t be taken apart using wrenches at that age, nor put back together by any normal means that doesn’t involve a welder.

    And that means that you MUST figure out some way to deal with the exhaust yourself.

  2. No reason why your dealer should have to replace all the Items on that part list. The biggest $ item CONVERTER & PIPE – TOYOTA (17410-0C100) as an example. They’re also gouging on the part prices.
